Politics and prayer

Original in French

From the September 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The collapse of certain political systems is bringing about a change in the world's balance of power and a struggle for democracy in many countries. Along with this change there are a number of challenges, including severe economic ones, causing acute anxiety about the future. But Christ Jesus reassures us: "Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?...But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:31, 33.

We can overcome concerns about political and economic instability through a better understanding of the omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience of the one Spirit, God. The Apostle Paul points out the need to conquer problems spiritually when he writes: "Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)..." II Cor. 10:3, 4. The Christian's most formidable weapon against fear and discord of any kind is prayer based in divine Science. Such prayer raises thought to the contemplation of the one spiritual universe, created by God—a universe without the slightest evidence of, much less strongholds of, animosity, lies, intolerance; a universe of goodness, abundance, peace, love. Rising above human concepts, thought recognizes the spiritual realm of universal harmony, where the sons and daughters of God reflect Love and cannot be in conflict.

Praying to heal a political, social, or economic problem also involves becoming aware of the constant unfoldment of good and of man's inseparability from good, God. Prayer in Christian Science includes acknowledging the oneness of God and man as perfect Mind and perfect idea. Such prayer blesses us, our community, and the whole world and opens the way to moral and physical healing. Healing comes from repentance and the replacement of evil or erroneous thoughts with the consciousness of the omnipresence and omnipotence of good.
