The divine consciousness and healing

From the May 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the synonyms for God clearly implied in the Bible is Mind. Divine Mind creates and knows everything that truly exists, and all that really exists is good, expressing the divine nature. It is also entirely spiritual, because God is Spirit, as the Bible tells us. The divine Mind knows each one of us as its perfect spiritual idea. Each individual reflects Mind in his or her own pure consciousness of spiritual reality. As we grow in our awareness of this relationship, we find greater joy—and healing.

A statement by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Unity of Good makes clear the nature of the divine consciousness: "God is All-in-all. Hence He is in Himself only, in His own nature and character, and is perfect being, or consciousness. He is all the Life and Mind there is or can be." Un., p. 3. God, then, is more than merely a source of consciousness; He is Himself all genuine consciousness, the All-in-all.

How contrary to this truth is the common supposition that consciousness is a personal, mortal thing apart from the one Mind. Individual man certainly does have consciousness, but it's not, as it seems to be, cut off from God, Mind. Man's consciousness reflects the infinity of Mind. We read again in Unity of Good: "All consciousness is Mind; and Mind is God,—an infinite, and not a finite consciousness. This consciousness is reflected in individual consciousness, or man, whose source is infinite Mind." Ibid., p. 24.
