Among my earliest memories...

From the June 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Among my earliest memories are visits to a Christian Science Sunday School, where I learned that God is everywhere and that He is Love. I learned that man was created in God's image and likeness; and that evil, or devil, is unreal because unlike God, the only creator. During an epidemic in those early years, I was diagnosed as having scarlet fever, but I was healed of all symptoms in a day through the prayers of my mother and a Christian Science practitioner. This healing and the simple truths I learned in Sunday School lay quietly in my heart during some later experiences.

In my teens I drifted, and for seven years experienced several illnesses that never cleared up, although they were treated medically. After the birth of our first child, I suddenly had a great desire to know again the loving Father-Mother God of my childhood. Perhaps this was because the conversation of the neighborhood always seemed focused on gossip and illness, and a misunderstanding with one of my neighbors had developed.

I wrote my mother and asked her to send me the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that I had used during Sunday School years. She also sent along a current Christian Science Quarterly. In just a few days of joyously reading the Bible Lesson, I found the physical ailments just fading away. This included healings of constant indigestion, of an internal infection that had never been cured with medicine, and, most precious, of scabies that had also defied medical treatment for years.
