In January 1992 I began to feel...

From the June 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In January 1992 I began to feel pain in one shoulder, and before long most of my body was very stiff and painful; movement was difficult, sometimes impossible.

My sister, a Christian Scientist, had been healed of what a medical specialist had diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. It had been to please her husband and daughter, who are not Christian Scientists, that she went to the specialist, who told her there was no cure for this disease, but that medication might give temporary relief. She had taken no medication, however, and been healed solely through reliance on Christian Science. The symptoms I had were very similar to those of my sister.

After a few weeks of praying for myself, I asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me, since the condition became even more debilitating. The practitioner and I were in almost daily contact by telephone, and he always referred to passages from the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings, in addition to sharing many helpful spiritual facts. He told me that my body could not tell me how I felt; that even if it felt weak, I could be strong in the truth.
