When I was a new student of Christian Science, I had an experience that showed me unmistakably how this Science affects our human condition by bringing about a change of thought. I had applied to several colleges, including one that I especially wanted to go to, which was for students of Christian Science. My parents, however, were not Christian Scientists, and while they did not like to deny my request, they felt they were unable to afford the tuition at this school, and the school had turned down our application for financial aid. I went to my room and opened Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, hoping for guidance. I read, "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind . . (p. 60). I realized profoundly that money—or the lack of it— could not stand in the way of God's plan for me.
Self-will instantly left me. I felt joyfully free and was completely willing to go to any college that seemed best for everyone. At the same time I felt a strong impulse to call the college I favored, which I did without hesitation. The school's admissions officers had, without my asking, just reexamined my application for aid. They informed me that they had reversed their previous decision. In fact, a grant was made for more money than my parents had requested. My attending that college was an extremely happy and fruitful experience for me and for my family.
After I had graduated from college and was living in another city, I had a healing of a gunshot wound. One night when I was walking home with a friend, we were robbed by two men with a gun. As they were walking away, one of the men turned and fired the gun. I was shot through the leg. My friend carried me home.
