From the August 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Reader Recently told us about his first encounter with the Journal. The issue included an article by someone who had prayed to understand God as the source of all action after her car broke down. This reader found the notion that prayer could have an effect on a mechanical failure so incredible that he threw the Journal across the room.

Challenging basic assumptions about how things work, about the very nature of substance and intelligence, is unavoidable for anyone who seeks to know spiritual truth. In this month's issue professionals in the natural sciences discuss the implications of understanding God as the unifying, divine Principle of the universe. And our cover feature points to the need to go beyond biological and psychological determinism to achieve peace in the world.

By the way, we're glad to report that in the case mentioned, the Journal survived its trajectory. Our skeptic picked it up later and began to investigate the possibility of a divine Science. And having since witnessed the operation of a law higher than mechanics many times, he is now a subscriber. Our hope is that many such readers will make the journey from skepticism to receptivity, and to the proof of healing.
