Sunday School—a community center

From the October 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Ever thought about the Christian Science Sunday School as community center? Maybe it's time to consider it!

Does this mean that a Sunday School would have to be open during the week, perhaps providing child care during after-school hours or family events some evenings? No, it doesn't. But the Sunday School can be spiritually open all the time. In other words, Sunday School students and the Christian Scientists in the area (not just those involved in Sunday School classes on Sunday) can be spiritually attuned to children, family, and the community throughout the week, embracing them with a Christian, healing quality of thought that recognizes each individual as a child of God and acknowledges God's care for each one. Such prayer plays a vital role in making any locale truly vibrant, prosperous, safe, and progressive.

It's natural for Sunday School to serve as a community center. First of all, Sunday School involves children and teenagers. They are so often open to others and want not only to be part of a community but to make a valuable contribution to it. They generally take the time to seek associations with others despite the hours of work they put into school and part-time jobs. They thrive on being with others, on making connections, and on making a difference.
