IN AN ARTICLE entitled "Truth versus Error," in Miscellaneous Writings, Mary Baker Eddy stated, "My life, consecrated to humanity through nameless suffering and sacrifice, furnishes its own proof of my practice." Mis., p. 350.
The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity has the potential to unveil for mankind a life devoted to holding up, for all to understand, the concept of God as all-powerful Love. And an accurate understanding of Mrs. Eddy's life is essential to the progress and effectiveness of the Cause of Christian Science. As she herself wrote to Edward Kimball, one of her students: "For the world to understand me in my true light, and life, would do more for our Cause than aught else could. This I learn from the fact that the enemy tries harder to hide these two things from the world than to win any other points . . . And I regret to see that loyal students are not more awake to this great demand in their measures to meet the enemies tactics." See Mary Baker Eddy: Christian Healer, pp. 153—154. (The "enemy" referred to here is the "carnal mind" St. Paul speaks of in his letter to the Romans. Rom. 8:7 .)
Mrs. Eddy's statement came in the aftermath of a lost opportunity to explain to the public her place as Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She'd prepared an address to be given at the World's Parliament of Religions, being held in conjunction with the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Her address was delivered by the editor of the Journal. Butbecause of a mistake afterward, the editor himself, rather than Mrs. Eddy, was credited in the newspapers as the author of the address and leader of the movement.
