STARTING POINT

A place for God?

From the May 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With today's busy schedules, many people are turning to sports clubs for recreation and a sense of community. The Journal invited Laury Hammel, founder, president, and CEO of the Longfellow health and recreation clubs in eastern Massachusetts, to share his insights on spirituality in the workplace.

Is there room for God in the workplace? Absolutely. I readily admit that there are as many definitions of God as there are people. Yet I think most people would agree that God is an all-powerful presence that is positive and love-giving. If asked what a qualities of God are, most people would probably create lists, that include compassion, kindness, caring, healing, and so on. These are also qualities that most of us would like to see present in the workplace.

Sometimes we see around us evidence of forces that are destructive, harmful, damaging, and fear-based. I am convinced, however, that this is not what God wants for our lives. God is present even during these challenging moments in life. He is always present and available. These negative situations and experiences are not part of God's work.
