One Wednesday evening recently as I was leaving church, I was involved in an automobile accident. As the paramedic began to check me over, I began to pray and know that blood could never sustain life, since my life was in God, who is infinite Life. A dear friend came over and reached into the car, took my hand, and told me to remember who was in control. I nodded that I understood her message that God is always in control. When asked if I wanted to go to the hospital, I answered with a strong "no", explaining that I was a Christian Scientist and would prefer to go home.
As friends drove me home, we prayed together to understand that God's creation is intact and perfect—never touched by an accident. Although there were no broken bones, it was obvious I needed to have a head wound attended to, so a Christian Science nurse was called. Two nurses came within the hour and bandaged the wound.
My spiritual identity had never been touched by injury.
