There were moments in my college years when I felt like God had abandoned me. And I thought that because of my failure to measure up to how good I thought I should be, I deserved to be abandoned. Even with all the doubts, I still wanted God to take care of me when I suddenly came down with a serious illness that included vomiting, high fever, and extreme weakness.
I checked in to a care facility where a Christian Science nurse provided the practical care I needed. I also kept in regular contact with a Christian Science practitioner, who gave me spiritual treatment. I don't know exactly how the practitioner prayed, but I do know that Christian Science treatment involves the desire to know more about God and about oneself as His spiritual creation. And, as I knew from past experience, healing comes as a result of understanding this relationship to God.
The practitioner reminded me of God's love and constant care for me, and gradually that "abandoned" feeling started to fade, and God's presence became more real. As a result, I was back in classes within a couple of weeks, completely free of the illness.
