20-SOMETHING

NEW LIFE, NEW FRIENDS

A young woman finds her way out of loneliness.

From the May 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

LAST SUMMER AFTER AN EVENING with friends, I couldn't help but reflect on the time when the joy and comfort of companionship seemed hopelessly missing from my life.

I realized I needed to stop searching for what I thought a perfect and complete life would be and instead embrace the good already present in my life.

In high school I had a close circle of friends. We were inseparable. So when it came time to leave each other for college, I had a rough time. My college in New York City didn't have a traditional campus life. Dorm space was extremely limited so most students, including myself, commuted or lived off campus, which made making friends and adjusting to my new surroundings quite a challenge. I often struggled with feelings of loneliness.
