WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, and later on when I was in my 20s, Mind became my favorite of the seven synonyms for God given by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health. For me, Mind reveals God's infinite, divine capacity of knowing good and acting harmoniously. As Science and Health explains, "All is under the control of the one Mind, even God" (p. 544).
Perhaps there is no more encouraging example of the power of Mind than the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. His life is a perfect illustration of the all-caring government of Mind. Joseph's successes were the result of his obedience to God and of his understanding that he was never outside the infinite care and perfect direction of Mind.
Joseph proved that if we trust God, there is always a way out of any difficulty. When he was carried into Egypt after his envious brothers sold him into slavery, Joseph retained his confidence that the Lord was with him. He continued to trust God even when he was imprisoned on false charges. This reliance on God turned what looked like failures into opportunities for greater usefulness to his neighbors and to humanity at large.
