Light sometimes pours into our lives when we expect it least and need it most.
Case in point: A mid-winter evening, 2007. After a tough day of upheaval and disappointment, I climbed the stairs to my apartment. As I stepped through the threshold, this simple truth settled in my mind: Clarity about a good future—that's what everyone wants. I'd said that line to a friend at work earlier in the day when we talked about metaphysics and the application of divine laws to our human lives. And now the line returned.
I switched on my stereo to keep me company as I unpacked my briefcase. I listened to Simon Callow's dramatic reading of Robert Fagles's translation of The Aeneid. After about 10 minutes, this line caught my ear: "Your path to safety will open first from where / You least expect it...."
