GLIMPSES OF GRACE

ON THE 7:54 TO NYC

From the August 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE COMMUTER TRAIN FROM Darien, Connecticut, to Grand Central Station was right on time. I got on board and settled into an aisle seat. The morning train ride takes a comfortable, quiet 60 minutes, with most commuters reading The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, or catching up with e-mail on their laptops. But this is my hour of prime time to read the Christian Science Bible Lesson, and on this particular week, the subject was Mind. Though this was only the second time I'd read the lesson that week, the message really resonated with me. I'd already underlined several citations from the Bible and Science and Health.

As the train approached the station, I felt refreshed and ready to great the day. I put the Lesson in my pocket and headed toward the rear of the train to avoid the inevitable long line inside each car. I ended up standing between the second-to-last car and the last car. When we entered the tunnel, just south of the 125th Street station, the door of the last car opened and a very pale young woman emerged. She said she didn't feel well and thought she might faint. At that very moment, she did faint—and I grabbed her to keep her from falling between the cars.

The train at this point goes over several track changes as it's guided toward the correct platform—so it was anything but a smooth ride. Eventually, I couldn't hold her up any longer and lay her gently on the floor, pulling her legs up so they weren't between the cars. Another passenger, a young woman, took hold of her hand. The woman who fainted now regained consciousness and stared into my eyes. Instantly, I said, "You are the perfect reflection of an always present, all-loving God. You live, move, and have your being in the consciousness of divine Mind, where nothing can harm you."
