Leader, Communicator, Healer

A 2011 series

From the November 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Graduate school was not going well at all. I was at an impasse with my master’s thesis, and feeling pretty distressed. One Sunday morning at church, I decided to pray. I’d been introduced to Christian Science a few months before, and I guessed my prayers might lead to some helpful tips. To my surprise an entirely unexpected idea came to me—change majors, get a graduate degree in library science, and take all available classes in archives!

I was a bit hesitant to make a change, but eventually transferred. My academic experience became far more harmonious and fulfilling. I got the degree. I anticipated a career as a music librarian, but a few years after graduation I began my work in the archives of The Mother Church.

So for me, getting to know Mary Baker Eddy has ended up as a career as well as a part of the religion I practice. Daily exploring her ideas, and the history of the Church she founded, has given me an opportunity to consider my own perceptions of the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science. I feel my work has helped me to see her in a more three-dimensional way—as a woman whose devotion to Christian healing led to revelation. This inspiration brought her into paths as an author, healer, and church builder.
