I first “met” Mary Baker Eddy when I was 12, just after my dad left my family. My mom’s sister sent us a Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and our friendship started. I first got to know Mrs. Eddy ever so faintly as I gained glimpses of her lovingkindness through the pages of her textbook. Sunday School teachers began to introduce her to me more formally, and our acquaintance grew.
At age 13, I was healed in an instant of acute asthma and allergies, for which I had been taking medication, as I read what Mrs. Eddy wrote about my true heritage as God’s beloved child. Moreover, my true Father—God—was revealed to me, and thus restored to me, as her writings introduced me to my one Parent. I experienced Mrs. Eddy’s gentleness and firmness, her grace and poise, and she became ever so dear to me.
As I delved even deeper into the pages of Science and Health, our relationship deepened. Christian Science class instruction showed me her God-appointed place, and I grew to love her. Later, her words, read at my wedding, were a blessing to my marriage, and she helped me place our three children in their Father-Mother’s care.
