I had put my house up for sale well in advance of my moving date. Six months was plenty of time, I figured. I’d sold several homes over the years, and they all had taken very little time to sell.
In praying about this move, my thoughts had been simple—“God, where can I best serve You?” I considered and appreciated this helpful passage by Mary Baker Eddy: “Two individuals, with all the goodness of generous natures, advise me. One says, Go this way; the other says, Take the opposite direction! Between the two I stand still; or, accepting the premonition of one of them, I follow his counsel, take a few steps, then halt. A true sense not unfamiliar has been awakened. I see the way now. The guardians of His presence go before me. I enter the path” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 347).
I made every effort to stand still, listen, and proceed with calm and gentle footsteps. The house didn’t sell, however, and now I had bills to pay on two homes. I placed each bill on the counter in order of due date, and then I prayed about each one—acknowledging with deep appreciation and gratitude the service it represented. And one bill at a time, the supply appeared. Sometimes resources came unexpectedly. My children began repaying a loan I’d made to them, and my monthly income increased in a way I couldn’t have planned.
