In the spring of 1978 an unsightly skin condition, perhaps eczema, developed on my scalp and eventually led to the development of a scab. At times it became painful and irritating, especially when it was exposed to the warm summer sun, or when I washed my hair.
For several months, I prayed about the condition with no results. During this period some relatives urged me to get medical treatment. When I told them I wanted to handle it through prayer, as I had done in other instances when a situation needed healing, they thought I was being foolish or stubborn.
However, at one point I became so discouraged by the lack of progress that I made an appointment with a dermatologist to get the name of the condition. A week later, I canceled the appointment after reading the following statement on page 234 of Science and Health: “Spiritual draughts heal, while material lotions interfere with truth, even as ritualism and creed hamper spirituality. If we trust matter, we distrust Spirit.”
