When I first began to seriously study Christian Science, I already had years of familiarity with the Bible and Science and Health. Or so I thought. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School from the time I was eight. But as I grew older, my interest in Christian Science plateaued. When I got to college, all kinds of challenges came, including questions about Christian Science. I tried answering them, but often felt I’d done a poor job. Then schoolwork and other activities took over, and I stopped going to Sunday School.
In my second year, my eyeglasses broke and I had no money to repair them. I’d worn glasses most of my life because of double vision. A friend, half supportive half teasing, dared me to go the distance with Christian Science and be healed. I wanted to try.
That night, as I sat in my dorm room alone, I leafed through Science and Health, seeking God’s guidance. I opened to the “Fruitage” chapter and remembered that everyone whose testimony appears there was healed simply by reading the book. Could I be as receptive as those folks? I wondered. I read the book that night and every night after, with one eye closed. Within a few weeks, the double vision cleared completely. During the same period, a friend who asked me for help through prayer was healed overnight of a dislocated shoulder.
