Spiritual Journey

My homecoming

From the March 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Jean Bates

Hardly a month goes by that I don’t think about how I came back to Christian Science. Almost every Christian Science Bible Lesson reminds me of that experience. I will write the word “Gutleut” in the margins of the Lesson, noting the citations that recall that eventful time.

I was a private in the United States Army stationed at Gutleut Kaserne (the Gutleut barracks) in Frankfurt, Germany, during peacetime in the early 1960s. After flunking out of college in my senior year, I’d enlisted in the army for three years.
