Your Questions & Answers

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers with responses from Journal readers. You’ll find information at the end of the column about how to submit questions. Readers are also encouraged to go to Chapter III of Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, by Mary Baker Eddy — “Questions and Answers.”

Why do Christian Scientists belittle human existence and thoughts?

From the March 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Q. Why do Christian Scientists belittle human existence and thoughts? We use our mortal minds to receive angelic messages as well as to direct our daily routines. What we mortals see is not some absurd imagination but what God created for us to see and enjoy. Also, I’m weary of reading that “I’m totally spiritual,” when I don’t know how that “works.”
—A reader in Michigan, US

A. Far from belittling humanity, Christian Science has come to give humanity a big, loving embrace, to enlarge and elevate human experience. Christian Science reverences the higher forms of human activity and greatly contributes toward humanity’s highest expectations.

Rather than belittling human existence, Christian Science participates in the most compelling and productive way of elevating the human experience. Jesus, the Bible’s prophets and healers, and Mary Baker Eddy, all did their work for humanity right in their daily lives. Their work in the midst of the human condition showed people how to advance in their own experience. The practice of Christian Science strives to bring about the coincidence of the human and the divine right where we are in our spiritual journey.
