Acknowledging and following Jesus

To follow Jesus is to be a healer.

From the April 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Why should Christians want to follow Jesus? It’s a good thing to think about, especially around Easter when Jesus’ resurrection is so much in thought. A while back I heard a talk by an ordained minister who said he had focused on that very question with some of the people who come to his services. Here are some responses:

The minister concluded by saying that to truly follow Jesus, we need devotion. Unless there is devotion, expressed as deep dedication, strong admiration, and spirituality, there is no real commitment.

I wonder what Jesus’ disciples would have said if asked why they followed him? Maybe they would have given one of the reasons on the list above! Despite their daily exposure to Jesus’ words and his healing power, on occasion the disciples were pretty unreliable: Peter denied him; Thomas was a doubter; and all but John deserted him at the time of his crucifixion.
