Class instruction in Christian Science —and God's mother-love

From the May 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What does the 12-lesson “Primary class” Mary Baker Eddy provided for students of this Science have to do with God’s mother-love? For me anyway, lots! Because the profound metaphysical experience of class instruction, which I took in my late teens, propelled me into a lifelong education in God’s healing, parenting love.

Not that I thought about God’s mother-love at the time. But I sure felt it. My teacher (who happened to be a man) couldn't have watched over us more attentively if he’d been a mother bird brooding over newly hatched chicks—giving us just what we could manage to ingest spiritually each day, helping us spread our wings as spiritual healers, and eventually nudging us to fly solo (with God) as fledgling Christian Science practitioners.

And that class was just the beginning. The instruction continued all through the years, as we stayed in touch with our teacher and attended yearly “association” meetings, where he helped us apply the truths in the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to our growing healing practice—at home, at church, in our communities. And we learned to support each other as healers, to share our victories and our challenges. So when our teacher was no longer with us, we went right on, as a united family mothered and fathered by God.
