Of this I am sure, that each Rule and By-law in this Manual will increase the spirituality of him who obeys it, invigorate his capacity to heal the sick, to comfort such as mourn, and to awaken the sinner.—Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 230
This year the Journal invites readers to take a deep dive into some of the By-Laws in the Church Manual under the section “DISCIPLINE, Article VIII, Guidance of Members.” We hope this series will encourage you to take a fresh look at the Manual, be inspired and guided by the divine direction it offers, and will lead you to share your insights about how these By-Laws and Rules enrich your life practice of Christian Science. —The Editors
The Christian Science nurse: practical wisdom and proper care
Christian Science Nurse. A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.
—Mary Baker Eddy, Manual of The Mother Church, Article VIII, Section 31
Mary Baker Eddy lived in an age when women were always called to nurse. If a child or a relative was sick, caring for them was woman’s work. It was also a time when women often treated the sick. Regular doctoring was supplemented with other remedies that women had learned from one another, because the usual methods used to administer medicine and the actual medicine given were so harsh—think leeches and mercury.
