Joining a worldwide, praying family

From the September 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Though I was not raised in Christian Science, as a child I always loved the Bible and the accounts of Jesus’ healings. I asked my parents and Sunday School teachers why we did not heal as Jesus said we would, and they replied that healing was only for those in ancient times.

After I was married and had a family of my own, my parents became interested in Christian Science and sent me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Through studying this book and working with Christian Science practitioners, I began to experience healing of physical ailments through prayer alone. My family and I were healed of colds, influenza, strep throat, ear infections, chicken pox, and other problems. I loved what I was learning about God as our Father-Mother, and it helped me raise my children with less fear and more joy.

I have never been much of a joiner, but it was so natural to want to join The Mother Church. Being a member of The Mother Church gives me a deep feeling of connection to our Master, Christ Jesus, and to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. More than that, it connects me with all those who love what Mrs. Eddy wrote, taught, and lived about the Holy Scriptures and her deep love and reverence for Christ Jesus and his healing ministry. It is most important to me that Christian Science is Bible-based and that Eddy refers to Jesus in her writings over 1,800 times using many names, such as “Christ Jesus the Ensample,” “the great Nazarene Prophet,” “our great Master,” “the Messiah,” and “the one anointed.”
