I was introduced to Christian Science a year after my husband passed away. My early study of Christian Science helped me overcome many different challenges our young family was facing. However, a couple of years after I started practicing this Science, my eldest daughter, by then an adult and living on her own, passed away as well, after an illness. I felt mentally and physically weakened by these events.
That’s when an alarming condition developed in the lower part of my abdomen. Every time I had my period, the bleeding was heavy. The pain was considerable, and I had to take sick days off from work on several occasions. Confronted by my family’s concern, I met with a gynecologist, and was diagnosed with a uterine growth. My family advised me to quickly check into a hospital. They feared the growth could be cancerous, or something equally serious. I told them I could not follow their advice, though lovingly given to help me, and I made the decision to turn entirely to God and seek healing solely through prayer, through Christian Science treatment.
At first, I prayed on my own, treating myself. Then I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. The practitioner helped me better understand that my real identity as God’s child is spiritual. We are made in His image and likeness, as it is written in the Bible (see Genesis 1:26, 27). The practitioner also helped me better understand what it means to be God’s reflection. Because God is infinite good, I saw that, as His reflection, I could reflect only infinite good, including health and peace. I better understood that I reflected all of God’s power and dominion “over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26). Little by little, I felt that I had spiritual power to overcome all fear, grief, pain, as well as any kind of challenge that presented itself to me.
