“Living water”—Love’s ever-flowing grace

From the March 2020 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Water is absolutely vital to us—human life can’t exist without it. In some parts of the world, women and children walk huge distances every day to get it. Even in areas of plenty, people carry bottles around with them to access water during the day.

Seen from a spiritual perspective, water can represent the very essence of life. In Scripture, it is often a symbol of the Word of God sustaining and feeding mankind. Christ Jesus refers to “living water”—the source of spiritual vigor that is never stagnant or scarce but pure and eternal.

A Bible commentary defines “living water” as the “spontaneous energy of unfailing interior grace” (The Interpreter’s Bible, Volume 8, p. 523). Because God is immortal Love, this unconstrained vitality of grace preserves us as His direct expression.
