Renewal and Substance

From The Christian Science Journal - February 3, 2011

Divine Mind, being infinite, never repeats itself. Hence the promise in the book of Revelation, “Behold, I make all things new” (21:5). Because of its infinite nature, existence is new every day.

It’s important to remember this when seeking healing and renewal.

One of the things that is made “new” through the teachings of Christian Science is the understanding of the true nature of substance. If one were to ask the man on the street what substance is, the overwhelming majority would reply, "Anything that is solid." In other words, matter! But ask a student of Christian Science the same thing, and one would get a very different answer. He or she would know well the explanation Mary Baker Eddy gives on page 468 of Science and Health. In that rather startling definition, we find that “Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance.”
