The thought and life of Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, followed reverently, consistently, the teaching and practice of the Master of Christianity, Christ Jesus. Because of this pure fidelity, the spiritual healing of disease and sin is being made known in the present day.
The early history of the Christian church constitutes a thrilling, a glorious epoch in the history of the human race. The early Christians, following implicitly the teaching and practice of their Master, clearly demonstrated the great fact that through righteous prayer they could assert their God-given dominion over evil.
On page 485 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes: "Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth.
In order to gain some appreciation of the problems which confront the student of the original Hebrew manuscripts of the Old Testament, it is well that one should pause to consider some of their peculiar characteristics. Scholars are agreed that, as originally composed, the Old Testament books were devoid of punctuation—the letters being set down continuously, that is, without any division between the words, or even between the sentences.
" Now are we the sons of God. " This inspired statement of John awakens thought and demands active acknowledgment of God's presence, and faithful witnessing to our sonship.
In the year 1611, the Authorized King James Version of the Bible came from the press. Since then, the Bible has provided the spiritual and intellectual basis of thinking men and women who have accomplished the most good for the human race.
The thoughtful man is impressed by the effort made by men and women, and too often even by children, to be "self-supporting. " It is many times a weary and despairing but courageous effort.
One meets quite frequently Christian Scientists who are inclined to consider church problems, or difficulties, as normal and inevitable. This may seem to be the case, if one is regarding existence merely from a material or human point of view.
In Christian Science, living is active living. Idly marking time has no place in Christian Science.
The prophet Isaiah no doubt recognized the necessity and naturalness of spiritual progress. How his inspiring words encourage the spiritually-minded to attain a broader outlook! He says, "Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes.
