Those who are engaged in the joyous activity of church work for the promotion of the Cause of Christian Science naturally experience growth in discernment and healing ability. It is a glorious privilege to help in the various branches of work in our movement, and the workers should daily experience blessings as the result of their work. As each suggestion of personal sense presents itself, the worker should replace the error with an affirmative counterfact of spiritual truth. He should know that he is an active messenger to spread the Word of God, and that nothing can obstruct this Word or hinder his work, which is able to bless and heal mankind.
Whether we are engaged in service in our branch church as Sunday school teachers, board members, distribution workers, circulation workers, or in other forms of activity, certain errors present themselves which need active denying. One of these errors is apathy. It is necessary, therefore, to know that alertness, joy, and vitality are qualities of Mind. When energetically utilized, these qualities help to liberate one from any so-called apathetic thought or resistance to the truth.
In dealing with procrastination—that continually putting-off trait—it is necessary to see man as in a continuous state of receptivity. In referring to the spirituality which made Jesus known to his disciples in the walk to Emmaus, our Leader states in Science and Health (p. 46): "The divine Spirit, which identified Jesus thus centuries ago, has spoken through the inspired Word and will speak through it in every age and clime. It is revealed to the receptive heart, and is again seen casting out evil and healing the sick." The receptive heart is ready now for the truth of Christian Science; it is not willing to procrastinate or put off until tomorrow any work which is necessary for the promotion of the Cause of Christian Science. The receptive heart is willing to work for God, and cannot be held back by indifference, unwillingness, or unconcern.
