AT THE POOL OF BETHESDA

From the May 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

He lay forlorn beside those waters gray,
More hopeless still he grew with passing time,
The saddest of them all—who day by day
Waited there, watching for the healing sign.

And then upon a day came one who spoke
Words of command, and he was quick to hear;
A light upon those darkened senses broke,
He rose, made whole and free from pain and fear.

O ye who sadly by the wayside lie,
Watching for healing sign with weary eyes,
This message is for you: false fear defy,
Listen as he did by that pool of sighs.

Beloved of God, take heart, no more repine;
Why should ye lie despairing on life's way?
No need to wait for a material sign—
The healing Christ is here and ours today.
