ONLY SHADOWS

From the May 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Along the pathway of my life
Shadows appeared to me.
I slower walked and pondered them,
Darker they seemed to be.

I quickened step and looked away
Into the realm of Love;
I sang a song of gratitude
For blessings from above.

In striving truly good to see,
I came to see aright;
I found 'twas my opacity
Which shut away the light.

If shadows mar my path again,
Or should my way seem dim,
I'll turn my gaze away from self
And let it rest on Him;

For He is light, and shadows dark
Can ne'er in Him abide;
His sunshine drives away whate'er
Would seem His love to hide.
