In the view of the Hebrew historian, Solomon was unsurpassed for sagacity and knowledge. On his accession to the crown, it is related that Jehovah appeared to him at Gibeon in a dream, and bade him choose a boon; and the young king, instead of asking for long life or riches or success in war, prayed to be endowed with an understanding heart that he might judge the people committed to him.
New Hampshire , the New England state in which Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was born and educated, is of more than passing interest to students of Christian Science. A hundred years ago, the southern part of New Hampshire was a farming region dotted here and there by villages and towns.
During his three years' ministry, Jesus was approached by a woman who had come out of the coasts of Tyre and Sidon seeking help for her daughter who was "grievously vexed. " The woman's persistent manner seemed to the disciples disorderly and unwarranted, and they urged the Master to send her away.
Mortal mind, with its load of unreal beliefs, constantly imposes upon tired humanity useless human opinions, criticism, and evil suggestion. Oh, how comforting it is for those disappointed ones bowed down with the belief of power in evil to experience the kindness and gentleness of love that is expressed to them by one who has found the peace of divine Love! The beauty of holiness filled the pure life of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
What joyous relief we experience when, through Christian Science, we understand that it is not necessary to plead with God to favor us, or to try to help Him do what we think is needful. His work is done, and it is our happy privilege to accept that fact and rely upon Him; to let it become living truth to us that God governs all through immutable laws, and that we, His children, are under His laws, and through them are partaking of abundant supply to meet our every need.
Many Bible students have marveled that Simon Bar-jona's confession of Jesus of Nazareth as the promised Messiah should have rewarded him with a new name, delivered to him the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and established his works of loosing and binding. Doubtless some have reasoned that had they witnessed the healing works of the Master for three whole years, they would have known as surely as did the impulsive disciple that Christ Jesus' coming was the culmination of law and prophecy concerning the Saviour; and they have pondered the more the Scriptural passage: "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Whenever organizations or governments are faced with an important task, one is sought who is believed to be able to accomplish it satifactorily. As one proves himself capable, he gains still larger growth by further experience.
In the eighth chapter of John's Gospel is recorded one of many incidents illustrative of Jesus' faithful witnessing to the truth about man. There it is related that the scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman taken in adultery.
" Spirit duly feeds and clothes every object, as it appears in the line of spiritual creation, thus tenderly expressing the fatherhood and motherhood of God" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 507 ).
