Peterborough, New Hampshire , a town nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is the hub of a mentally lively area, where all sorts of religious beliefs and healing practices flourish. That's where I live and go to church.

As the Journal editorial staff discussed commitment to community, it seemed only natural to ask a cross-section of activists to convey some of the reasons their work is meaningful to them. The comments below are excerpted from ideas they discussed with Journal staff member Sharla Pugh.

Many of us lack a sense of belonging to a community today. Changes in culture and lifestyle butt up against traditions, making us feel disconnected from each other.
