Barbara Dossey on spirituality-based nursing

From the January 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

one of the keynote speakers at the 16th Annual Westberg Parish Nurse Symposium shared some thoughts about spirituality with Elizabeth Beam who covered the conference for the Journal. Educator, consultant, and researcher, Dr. Dossey is the author of Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer and co-author of Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice, among other books. She and her husband, Larry, are well known for their spiritual approach to health care. Both have written and spoken extensively on the subject. Below are Dr. Dossey's remarks:

Spirituality is at the core of the healing process.

"Where is Spirituality Going?" is a marvelous question because spirituality must be taken seriously. We need to be asking ourselves in the words of Florence Nightingale, "What is my must?" What do I have to do? Spirituality is at the core of the healing process and journey. It's what gives meaning to our lives and facilities the interconnectedness with self, others, nature, and God/Lifeforce/Absolute/Transcendent. It may or may not involve an organized religion.
