Church, for me, started out with the word light. I remember being maybe two or three years old, sitting on the kitchen floor while my mother prepared supper. It was dark and cold outside. The middle of winter. And I would stare up at the overhead light. It brought comfort and warmth. My mother told me, when I was in my early twenties, that the first word I said was "light."
Light today, for me, continues to symbolize warmth, Spirit, Love—essentially God. And it has always done that, even though the religious paths I've taken over the years have varied.
Having explored these paths, I managed to discover teachings that lined up with what I had always felt was true. A poster in a subway led me to a service at The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, and that service led me to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. It took me many years to link up with Christian Science, but I'm eternally grateful for this Science and for the clarity and joy it brings me every day.
