"The signs of the times"

When I answered the phone, I heard my two grown daughters crying in terror. They were in the mountains of Colorado watching a gigantic mudslide. My older daughter reported that mud, dirt, and rocks were rushing down at their car, and mud was pushing other cars toward a dangerous precipice on the other side of this road.

My heart took a big leap of panic. The fear we felt at that moment seemed overwhelming, but my daughters were calling to ask for my prayers. I gently suggested that they sing hymns to each other; hymns have always been a source of comfort and healing in our family. After I put down the phone, I turned with all my heart to God for an answer.

I have been in those same mountains and fallen in love with their grandeur. At one time, they had inspired me to explore in the Bible the ways in which mountains are used as symbols of victories over human challenges. For example, in Isaiah we read, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good; that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” (52:7). And in Psalms, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth” (121:1, 2).
