Post-college humility lessons

From The Christian Science Journal - July 8, 2013

In 2012 I was working at my first real job after college, earning an income that was a big support to my husband and me, when everything suddenly changed.

I had been promoted, but because of the change and some unique circumstances at work, the environment became tumultuous and stressful. During this difficult time, I contacted a Christian Science practitioner and leaned on Christian Science and the truth about God and man, which it reveals, in order to continue to do my new job well and without fear or anxiety. I knew that Christian Science would help because I had witnessed many healings in my life, ranging from the healing of large growths on my body in college, to the healing of an inability to turn my neck for several weeks.

And so in this case, although it wasn’t easy, I was able to carry on with my daily work. Whenever I was confronted by hurtful comments from a superior, I kept this quote from Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures at the forefront of thought: “The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares” (p. 574). My entire goal was to stay above the turbulent waters, remain poised, and not say anything I would regret. The ability to hang on to spiritual ideas in this tense situation was huge for me; it was the first time ever that I was able to separate myself from tough circumstances and focus only on Truth, while still in the moment.
