The joy remains

From The Christian Science Journal - December 9, 2013

A granddaughter and I both have the same middle name, which is Joy. At Christmastime we have fun giving each other little “joy” presents, such as Christmas ornaments, mugs, or handmade items from a craft fair.

A few years ago this granddaughter gave me a gift of a bar of handmade soap with the word JOY molded into the soap in bold red letters. After the holidays I put the soap on the soap dish next to my bathroom sink. There is a large mirror over the sink that goes clear down to the countertop, and when I pushed the soap dish back toward the mirror, I had a wonderful surprise!

The way I placed the soap in the dish the lettering that was reflected in the mirror said something quite different—it said YOU. I was delighted with this discovery and felt a wonderful identification with the quality of joy as I thought about ideas that it symbolized to me as a Christian Scientist.
