What we can learn from Groundhog Day

From The Christian Science Journal - February 18, 2013

My favorite movie is Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. If you haven’t seen it, Murray’s character, Phil Connors, is an arrogant and self-centered TV weatherman. Every year on Groundhog Day, Phil broadcasts from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, reporting on whether the town’s famous groundhog sees his shadow. The claim is that if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

However, when Phil wakes up the morning after this holiday, he discovers that it is Groundhog Day again, but only for him. He then repeats the exact same Groundhog Day hundreds of times. The only difference is that he remembers everything from each day relived, but no one else does. And he doesn’t know how to end the cycle.

I’ve felt this way before—frustrated that, though I have daily prayed for healing through Christian Science, no progress seems to be made. The answer many might say is to go deeper in my study of Christian Science. But having read Mary Baker Eddy’s writings many times, I’ve always felt that I’ve understood and agreed with the teachings of Christian Science. So in these frustrating times, I’ve wondered what am I missing?
