The prodigal daughter

- What Membership in The Mother Church means to me

Christ Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son means so much to me because I’ve always felt like the prodigal daughter. This tender story of love reminds me of my membership in The Mother Church. Let me tell you why.

I was raised in Christian Science, and when I was young, I always wanted to please everyone. When I was 12 years old, I joined The Mother Church, making my mom and Sunday School teacher very proud and happy. But when I became a teenager, I hadn’t really made this healing Science my own. So I left Christian Science to go out and have a carefree life of partying, drinking, and smoking. I was so naive.

By the time I was in my mid-30s, I’d been divorced and was remarried with two children. My health had started to fail me, and I became very afraid to go to a doctor for what would be diagnosed. I decided to call a practitioner to help me pray for healing. After talking to the practitioner, I felt relief from my fears and decided to go to a Wednesday night testimony meeting at a local Christian Science church.
