Prayer without an agenda

Golden aspen leaves were lazily drifting in an Indian summer breeze, landing in a pool of still water. I sat on the bank of a mountain stream.

Spiritual heritage

I was introduced to Christian Science by dear friends after decades of belonging to another Christian denomination. Prior to turning to Christian Science, I had severe health problems for which I sought medical treatment.

A play-lette: glorifying God

Scene One: It is fast approaching time for church elections of new board members at my branch church. I have served two prior times on the board, already have a number of meaningful, time-consuming jobs at church, and I do not want to be on the board.

Out of the mouth of babes

Our three-year-old grandson, Asher, was mis-behaving; he didn’t want to finish his macaroni and cheese. His interest was in playing with his toy fireman.

The majesty of Christian Science

One evening, as I pulled into the church parking lot for the Wednesday evening service, I learned an important meeting with our lawyer had been delayed—yet again. This meeting revolved around a sensitive legal matter that had caused me and my family a great deal of anguish.

Fearless performance

It was such a privilege to be a part of a jazz workshop a number of years ago, working with musicians who were willing to share years of honed experience. While most of us were amateurs, all of the teachers were currently making commercial CDs or performing live all over the world.

Daily grace

One day, as I planned a lesson for my Sunday School class the following week, I came upon the meaning of the word grace. As it is used in the Bible, I understand its meaning to have an aspect of undeserved goodness, such as when someone does you a favor unexpectedly.

An unexpected gift

Each Christmas season I read the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel of Matthew (see chap. 2:1–11 ).

YOUR INSIGHTS

WHEN A CLOSE family member had found it hard to fall pregnant, she felt helpless, and there were monthly disappointments and bitter tears. For my own peace, I began to pray to get a better understanding of God as Life and Love (two names for God found in the Bible).

YOUR INSIGHTS

Where Do You Sit in church? Does it matter? Why do so many Christian Scientists sit in the back of our auditoriums for church services? Why do many of those same individuals sit right down front for a Christian Science lecture? Is animal magnetism, the term Mary Baker Eddy used to describe error or the carnal mind, handling us and we simply don't recognize it? I had an experience a number of years ago regarding this that has meant a lot to me. I was sitting in church one Wednesday evening with my wife when all of a sudden this angel thought came to me, quite loudly I must say: "Go sit down front!" It was quite starting really.
