Daily grace

From the December 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day, as I planned a lesson for my Sunday School class the following week, I came upon the meaning of the word grace. As it is used in the Bible, I understand its meaning to have an aspect of undeserved goodness, such as when someone does you a favor unexpectedly. It has a measure of surprise that leaves you feeling grateful. It reminded me of my husband, who always lets someone go ahead of him in traffic. He tells me that maybe it is the high point of someone’s day. It’s such a small thing, but it is so powerful to think that a little gesture could change a person’s outlook. Every day, God is constantly pouring forth grace. It’s a form of love that touches and leaves the recipient in awe.

No matter what the material picture seems to be, we can be on the lookout for the true spiritual reality that is expressed in each one of us. This line of thinking helps us overcome challenges we might have in our daily lives. When our thought is aligned with God, we find the gift of grace, an awe-inspiring love that comes from the divine.

Thinking of examples of grace in my own daily experience helps me when I am in the midst of seeming turmoil. Once, when I was overcome with grief when our family cat passed on, a surprising source of comfort came in the form of a comical cat at a veterinary clinic. This cat came trotting out to greet me, sporting a groomed tail with a pom-pom at the end, and allowed me to stroke his soft fur. His demeanor and the look in his eyes helped me see that all was well. It instantly comforted me and lifted me. To me, this was an expression of God’s kindness in the form of a cat—grace and harmony were being expressed and taking the place of discord. I saw that I could never be in a state of loss. Now, when I think about my former cat, I remember the comfort I felt from this office cat and it brings immediate consolation. No matter how small, the awe and gratitude that come from an expression of grace are reminders that God is all and His love is always overflowing.
