I was just concluding a three-year term as First Reader at church and thinking about how grateful I was that every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning I could look up and see the words “He sent his word, and healed them” (Ps. 107:20) inscribed on the back wall of the church auditorium. They often remind me of the words from a loved hymn by Violet Hay based on this psalm. It begins:
Lo, He sent His Word and healed them,
Still that Word of God is here.
Still its tender healing message
Speaks to every listening ear.
(Christian Science Hymnal, No. 175)
At the time, my husband was traveling on business and had stopped in to visit with a family member prior to leaving the country for an extended period. He phoned me to relay a disturbing conversation he’d had with this dear one, who had experienced physical healing in Christian Science on many occasions throughout her life. She told him that she no longer believed Christian Science was effective—that it was a farce.
