Unified on the revelation

From the December 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An unusual salutation? Perhaps not. I love the vision so many members have for our Church. But recently I visited with a member who instead had some concerns. In the course of our conversation, I indicated that we were working together. She pointed out that we were not working together! But I insisted that there was nothing in the world more important than the revelation of Christian Science, and we both prized this divine Truth more than anything in our lives. This creates an unparalleled bond, whether or not we see it at the moment.

We sometimes may not fully recognize this pearl of Christian Science and how it unifies us. Also we may need to see more clearly the role it plays in the world, and why the world is blessed when its members are at one. Hundreds of individuals are accepted into membership each year. As Clerk of The Mother Church, I have a special appreciation for Mary Baker Eddy’s words about Christian Scientists’ names being “woven together . . . in the web of history.” Behind this little phrase is actually a much larger point. In fact, the full statement is telling us what will help bring peace on earth. Here are her words: “When the hearts of Christian Scientists are woven together as are their names in the web of history, earth will float majestically heaven’s heraldry, and echo the song of angels: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men’ ” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, p. 145).

As I understand this, she seems to be saying that peace on earth will happen, at least to some extent, because of what Christian Scientists do among themselves. Can you imagine that? A relative handful of people among almost seven billion, are a key to peace on earth?
