"GIVEN AWAY! PATENT MEDICINES!"

From the May 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The world does move, we can truly exclaim, when patent medicines, formerly so "dear" to the people, have to be "given away" to be got rid of. What we get for nothing we nothing value, whether it be nostrums or real medicine. "I won't listen to a single word against Christian Science," said one of Boston's eminent medical men recently;" it's what we have all got to come to; and the instruction that fits men and women to effect the results one of those Scientists has just accomplished with an old patient of mine, is mighty low at three hundred dollars per course." Nobody can push the truth of that statement to the wall. The day will never come when mental medicine will be advertised "given away," as now are the once precious old syrups and sarsaparillas.

— Physiology is a name in our land. Institutions honor it, and before it Materia Medica bows the knee. Notwithstanding all this, it has not improved mankind.—
