"Hold Fast to That Which is Good."

From the May 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The curse of humanity is the inherent habit of holding fast to traditions. On the other hand, it is unwise to be seduced by every doctrine.

The first demand made of those who introduce a new innovation should be— What are the fruits? This is a perfectly reasonable demand, with which no fault should be found from those who are able to demonstrate what they preach. This is what Jesus of Nazareth demanded of his followers. He says, If you do not believe my words, you must believe in my good works.

How is it possible for any but the very wilfully ignorant not to love the charity, the works of love, the generous hospitality, the perfect purity of Jesus, and hold fast to him for his very goodness. The greater your transgressions against all the lovely attributes you so admire in him, the stronger should be your "holdfast."
