NOTES AND ANECDOTES

From the May 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is a class of people who had rather die than live by other than the traditions of the dead past. If sick', they will live or die only in the orthodox way. So they generally die early. They would rather give a hundred dollars to a drug doctor and endure sickness and pain, than give a hundred cents for a knowledge of the science of life giving them health for sickness.

—A man fell into a river. It was a cold spring day, but that did not deter a warm-hearted witness of the accident from jumping in and effecting a rescue. His warm heart probably kept him from freezing. The rescued man was a noted miser, but as soon as they reached the shore the impulse of gratitude was strong enough to cause him to put his hand into his pocket. After some fumbling a ten-cent piece was produced and reluctantly tendered his savior. The man viewed the money; then he in his turn put his hand into his pocket and produced the sum of eight cents, which he offered the miser. "What is that for?" he asked. "It's the change for the ten cents you gave me." "But I gave you the ten cents for saving my life!" the miser exclaimed, in a generous outburst. "Well," replied his preserver, "I think you gave me too much; you are cheating yourself; your life isn't worth more than two cents, so here, take the change; "saying which he turned away, leaving the shivering miser to figure out whether the appraisement of his rescuer was not about fair.

—The originator of the great movement which is emancipating thousands from sickness and sin,—the incorporator of the State Chartered Metaphysical College, makes a charge of three hundred dollars for teaching her Science of Life." "Exorbitant!" many are crying out. "I will teach metaphysical healing for twelve, or twenty-five dollars," says a certain charlatan.
