The following official statement is made by the authority of the Christian Scientist Association, the only body of organized metaphysicians in the world, the association having been organized July 4, 1876. It derives its name from a purely mental system of healing, discovered in 1866, by Mary Baker Glover (now Mrs. Eddy), who for the first time in history appended the word "science" to Christianity. This theological departure incurred the sharp censure of many, but it is claimed that the good accomplished by the system proves the term properly bestowed. Christian Science claims that the Divine mind governs all in the eternal order and harmony of life, truth and love; that Jesus taught and demonstrated this Science, healing the sick, casting out error, raising the dead. It dated the Christian era. The Christian Scientist Association is composed of a large number of students, regularly instructed, actively engaged in healing, and pledged together in a common cause of humanity and love. None claiming the title of "C. S." (Christian Scientist) are to be recognized, unless holding proper certificates to that effect. The Massachusetts Metaphysical College was chartered in January, 1881, under Gov. Long's administration, in accordance with the act passed by the General Assembly of Massachusetts, "for educational, charitable, benevolent, religious, literary, scientific or medical purposes." (See Public Statutes, chap. 115,375, sect. 2.) The only text-books in use are the Bible and Science and Health. No person is denied admission to this institution because of his secular or religious opinions, but reliable evidence of a strictly moral character is required of all who enter.
"This is the faith of the Fathers,
The faith the Apostles delivered."
